GardMed - Historic Gardens in the Mediterranean Region

According to The Times of Malta the European Regional Development Fund under the Italia-Malta 2007-2013 Operational Programme is funding a new initiative called GardMed,a network of 15 public and private gardens in Malta and the Southern provinces of Sicily with the aim to promote and conserve the cultural and natural heritage associated with historical Mediterranean gardens.  To quote the Gardmed website:

'The purpose of GardMed is first to establish a network of support and technical expertise to ensure their (the garden's) sustainability and sound management. The ultimate scope of this effort is not limited to the survival of green areas representing our common natural heritage but, more fundamentally, to link their growth to sustainable, conscious, environmentally concerned local development. This effort also entails raising public awareness of Mediterranean gardens as cultural spaces at the centre of the conscious activities of those living alongside them. In other words GardMed wants to transform Mediterranean Urban Gardens from isolated, costly and social ineffective organisms into pivot sustainable agents of environmental urban development.'

As part of the programme, activities are  being held at the University of Malta Argotti Botanic Gardens from end of June until September. For further information contact the Argotti Botanic Garden on + 356 2124 8984 between 8 a.m. and noon, e-mail argottigardens@um.edu.mt or download a list of events at www.um.edu.mt/argotti/activitiesen.

A list of the world's top 10 gardens is offered by The National.  I am sure we can all put together a similar list, and I just did.  But its not that easy to whittle down from thousands of gardens to just ten.  From those I have visited and for what it is worth here is my top 10 historic gardens - in no particular order.  Would love to hear your thoughts and favourites:

2    Stourhead

4    Ryoan-ji
5    The Lingering Garden
6    Chatsworth

8    Vaux-le-Vicomte

The Garden Conservancy's Open Days Program 2012

Just published is the 2012 Open Days Program.  Arranged by Region, the schedule lists hundreds of significant, historic and beautiful gardens that will be opening their gates to welcome you throughout 2012.  So, if you are traveling in the States this year, be sure to make a note of the link and check it against your destination.  Better still arrange your itinerary around the open days and plan to visit some of America's finest historic gardens.  Also check out The Garden Conservancy's home page for all the latest news.

A Digital Archive of Historic Gardens and Landscapes

To quote its website: ‘The primary mission of Catena, the Digital Archive of Historic Gardens and Landscapes, is to fill a void in American higher education by assembling a searchable collection of historic and contemporary images that include plans, engravings, paintings, and photographs’.

However, you don't need to be American or in higher education to enjoy the website's contents.  For here you will find a range of resources that focus on specific historic gardens, but with an emphasis on those of Renaissance Italy.  However, one rather annoying feature of the site is the requirement to enable pop-up windows to see the results of your search.  Nonetheless, a very useful tool.
